My #1 spot over all love the scenic drive to get there and noe you csn stop at the Harriett Tubman museum on the way makes it more adventurous
This is a quaint, privately owned restaurant located on an island on the Chesapeake Bay. The fare is obviously centered on seafood, with some being sourced from the many working fishing/crabbing boats surrounding the restaurant. But the best part of Old Salty's is the beautiful drive getting there. You'll be driving narrow, water level island roads with continuous gorgeous views of the bay. After dinner, continue driving to the end of the islands, to the tiny fishing town of Hoopersville. This is the "true" essence of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay heritage!
Food wasn't good. The service was horrible. Was greeted when we walked in but that person just walked away and never told us where we can sit. After getting someone else's attention they got us a seat. Then we sat for 20 mins and never got a server until we asked... Apparently no one ever told them they had another table?! Server got my drink order wrong, (no big deal). Had the 3 piece country fried pork. It wasn't fried what so ever and very dry. Mac and cheese was old. It had been sitting out for a while, but hey the mash potatoes weren't bad. Won't be going back.
While we thoroughly enjoyed the drive to get there, the restaurant itself was somewhat of a disappointment. We were greeted very well, and the service was kind and efficient. That said, the food was disappointing. My husband ordered the crab soup, which had shells in it. My salad was incredibly fresh and crispy, but the server gave me less than a tablespoonful of dressing and i couldn't get her attention for more, so i just ate it fairly dry. The rolls, while tasting homemade, were obviously microwaved to warm them, giving them a rubbery texture. My Catfish was cooked perfectly and tasted fresh, but needed more than the tiny piece of lemon served with it , and again, i couldn't get the server's attention so gave up and ate it dry. My side dish of corn pudding was too eggy and mushy, which was so disappointing as i dearly love corn pudding. My husband enjoyed the Cucumber salad, but said the asparagus was tasteless. He ordered the crabcake which tasted fine, but honestly was not worth the $22 cost. He left hungry. I ordered the bread pudding, which like the corn pudding, was way too eggy. And it was so sweet i ate less than half of it. The last straw for me was the bathroom. It was moderately clean, but in serious need of renovation. Again, the people were certainly nice enough, but for the time and effort to get there, and the price of the entrees, it didn't seem worth it to me. I hate to leave a negative review, but felt it might save someone else the disappointment. There are too many other options on the Eastern Shore to bother going here.
The drive along Hoopers Island Road is a very interesting experience in itself, but the lunch we had at Old Salty's made it memorable. Quaint and charming in an old schoolhouse, everything we had to eat was delicious, crab cakes, soft crab, corn on the cob, onion rings and cold local beer. The staff is friendly and professional. I'd make a special trip to visit this great local spot again.
